Margin

Definition

Margin in futures trading is the good-faith deposit required to open and maintain a position, not a down payment or loan. It is set by the exchange and varies by contract. Margin ensures traders can cover potential losses and is divided into initial margin (required to open a position) and maintenance margin (minimum balance to keep it open). If your account falls below maintenance margin, you receive a margin call.
