Every professional pilot trains in a simulator before flying passengers. Every surgeon practices on cadavers before operating. Yet most retail traders skip straight to live trading with real money. Paper trading exists to prevent this expensive mistake.

What Is Paper Trading?

Paper trading (also called simulation or demo trading) lets you trade with virtual money using real-time market data. Your orders execute against live prices, but no actual money is at risk. It's the risk-free way to:

  • Learn how your platform works (order entry, charts, strategy management)
  • Test your trading strategy in live market conditions
  • Verify your automated bots execute correctly before risking capital
  • Build confidence in your approach

NinjaTrader Simulation Mode

NinjaTrader offers a fully featured simulation environment. Follow our NinjaTrader automated trading setup guide to get the platform installed and configured. It's identical to live trading in every way except one: no real money is involved. Here's how to use it:

  1. Connect to Sim101 account — This comes pre-configured with NinjaTrader. No broker account needed.
  2. Use real data — Connect a live data feed (Kinetick offers free delayed data) so your simulation reflects actual market conditions.
  3. Enable your strategy — Add your bot or manual strategy to a chart and start trading.
  4. Review performance — Use NinjaTrader's Strategy Analyzer to review every trade, P&L, and performance metric.

Common Paper Trading Mistakes

  • Not taking it seriously — Treat sim money like real money. If you wouldn't risk $5,000 on a real trade, don't do it in simulation either.
  • Using unrealistic size — Paper trade with the same position size you'll use live. Trading 10 contracts in sim when you'll trade 1 live teaches you nothing.
  • Ignoring slippage — Sim fills are perfect. Live fills are not. Account for 1-2 ticks of slippage in your expectations.
  • Not paper trading long enough — One good week doesn't validate a strategy. Sim trade for at least 30 days across different market conditions.

When to Go Live

You're ready for live trading when:

  • Your strategy has been profitable in simulation for 30+ trading days
  • You understand exactly how every feature of your platform works
  • You've experienced losing streaks in sim and stuck to your rules
  • Your risk management is configured and tested
  • You're comfortable with the daily P&L swings at your intended position size

HEXGO's Simulation Support

Every HEXGO bot works in NinjaTrader's simulation mode. We recommend all new users paper trade for at least 2 weeks before going live. This verifies your connection, data feed, and bot configuration — so when you flip the switch to live, you know exactly what to expect. Start your free trial and test our bots in simulation before committing.
